Getting Started With Social Media

The landscape industry isn’t exactly known for being on the cutting edge of technology.

The new ground our industry breaks is to start new projects! So it should come as no surprise that our industry is lagging behind what is going on in the digital space today.

Years ago it was all about the yellow pages.  Every business wanted to make sure they were listed in the right categories, and an inside joke used to be “look for the guy” that placed the biggest Yellow Page ad, and that will be the next landscape company to go out of business. As the yellow pages gave way to the emerging internet, most landscape companies made some attempts to get a website up, and then after that a Facebook page.

But a lot of landscape professionals would tell you that unless someone was paying attention to it, social media and websites didn’t bring much business to their landscape companies.

However, that digital landscape is starting to radically change.

In just the short amount of time since Facebook has gone public, and Google and other search engines  started to focus on the local component of the web, it’s no longer an option to ignore what is going on in social media, websites and search engine optimization. Everyone knows that word of mouth advertising for your work is your primary lead generation tool, but with some knowledge, your business can accomplish quite a bit for a with some investment in the digital arena.

As the search engines become more hyper local sensitive, the more important it is for the landscape industry to get up to speed on this. And there are a lot of moving parts here.

The new generation taking over are the Millennials and their comfort and expectation with how to leverage technology is going to impact the landscape industry.  For a quick reference look at the number’s in this recent article in Adweek. Technology that was available to only large companies just several years ago is proliferating and enabling the smallest business owners to get big returns on leveraging technology to manage and grow their business.
